Big Trouble In Little China and Escape from New York star Kurt Russell recently hit the interview circuit promoting his latest movie. He discussed almost being cast as Han Solo in Star Wars as well as rumors of being cast in Guardians of the galaxy Vol. 2.
On the Han Solo rumors he told the Daily Beast that he actually tried out for two parts, “both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker.
That was back in the day when all the usual suspects in their twenties would roll in there, and it was early 1976 because at the same time was a television Western called ‘The Quest’ that they were offering me. I really loved the part.
I was in there on ‘Star Wars’ and remember asking George one day, ‘Do you think you’re going to use me or not?’ And he said, ‘I don’t know which part I prefer you in. I don’t know if I like you as Han and this guy as Skywalker, or this guy as Han and you as Skywalker. I don’t know.
I said, ‘I gotta make a decision on this Western and I gotta go to work,’ and he said, ‘I just can’t give you an answer.’ So I said, ‘All right, I’m going to go take this Western and there will be one less guy to think about.’ I don’t know if he would’ve hired me.
I didn’t turn down ‘Star Wars.’ But that’s the fun history of that. You know, it was pretty fun because George taped it, and I had no idea what I was saying. I’m talking about a Millennium Falcon and however long it took to get from here to there and the Death Star.
So we’re just doing stuff, having no idea what you’re talking about and no idea what you’re doing.”
Russell also addressed the rumors that he had been cast as Peter Quill’s father in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel GotG Vol. 2 when he spoke to the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, “I literally got a phone call two days ago about this. I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy. I don’t know anything about it. I’m one of the four idiots that’s never seen it.
Many times I’ve heard ‘That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie and great characters.’ I don’t know it. So, I didn’t realize that the man (James Gunn) had written and directed it. So we talked to each other on the phone and I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read it, and I have to watch the movie because I can’t bring anything for you. I’ve got nothing to offer here.’
So, I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do.”
